Subconscious Excavations : |
Nothing disappears without a trace -- Life’s experiences embedded within us are like special recordings of time that capture aspects of our journey through life. Tangible events inscribe themselves, leaving behind impressions. Abstraction helps me towards an integration of thought and spirit with the beauty in our everyday lives. Each image that emerges reaches out towards a truth - an intuitive understanding of the nature of reality. Though the truth constantly evades us, as if from behind a veil which empirically we cannot cross, yet, in that moment of abandon and romance with colour, texture and tone, the image created brings it out in its nakedness. The form loosens its surface tension and bursts at its seams setting free a plethora of experiences on to the space of the paper.
Abstract offers a space larger than life-- it gives space for everyone to enter. A friend once said when she came to my studio for the first time, “I enter the world of ‘life’ to ‘more life’, the threads I see in your works connect the two, and in the ‘truth’ of these lines I find answers to my questions.” Abstract allows for many journeys to come together.
The Journey of the line... It is the line for me which turns, twists, makes a wedge, engulfs space, is sometimes soft- feathery, sometimes strong, then creates a form, and also helps the form to burst at its seam, it may also be flat and broad as in a stroke- but is always a line. This line is infused with the energy in that moment of silence when I am one with my work, regardless of where that energy has come from. It disengages from my being, enters another medium- and begins to tell its own story .Creating another environment which is beyond my conscious imagination.
Inspiration -- From ‘Life’ and ‘Art’ itself. In life my reaction time to everything is almost instant. I can enjoy a moment for ‘itself’ which is liberating. Art is my respite- that place where I feel completely in control. Even when life has proved challenging, art has grounded me, this is where I am most complete. Art for me is a Divine energy. It is an energy that cleanses me and then leaves behind that work, that impression. I am just an instrument at that time. I relate to life through this creative energy- a life giving force which lets me live and tell my story. Even the dark depths become my richest source and the ‘void’ a place from which life is born again, there is hope!
For me ‘Art’ leads to a spiritual growth, it has its own life beyond that human quotient -- It doesn’t bind the viewer. It shows the way but doesn’t necessarily force you to follow it. It just remains there for you and gives you the freedom to choose the moment of response!
Memory becomes a part of my work--There is a part of my life in my younger days which I can relate to my present. I was a national level athlete in school- At that time, I could experience all the dramatic energy of a sport – that high strung energy, if you like. It was exhilarating. During the run, I would simply stop feeling the fatigue. My mind would switch off and euphoria would wash over me. After the finish line I would lie flat on the ground looking at the sky. At that moment, I would be one with myself. It was intoxicating because both my body and my mind were cut off and the only rush I felt, was the circulation of my blood that ‘life giving force.’
That energy or ‘self’-- has continued through my work. It is the same life giving force which epitomizes, hope, regeneration, and continuity, and in that silent moment of total surrender while I work, it is this that flows through it, contrasting tones and creating a drama ,bound together by a calm. |

The Magical Kingdom : |
A space which I can freely enter, a space which exists within, a space which exists in all of us!
Here, the life giving force flowing in our veins exists without expectation only giving of itself as it is meant to do. No questions, no answers, only a beautiful movement, nurturing and valuing every moment of its existence a gift from God!
It is here that there is a direction for all movement, unhindered, free and flowing, in constant motion keeping with the constant motion of the world – energy that never stands still moving from one concentration to another. Paths cross but do not disturb one another, instead carry along with themselves in their own flow.
Each image is a chapter from within. Page upon page, every line, spec and tone is tied to my inner being, a reflection of my space within. Life’s experiences embedded here are like special recordings of time, not just in a mere transient mark or a trace which may fade away, but in a conviction and courage to live.
The line moves on with the pull of the current and the push of the wind, sometimes light, sometimes heavy, enclosing space, forming a delta of capillaries carrying the life giving force, crossing the crevices with painless ease. Like a pilgrim on a voyage, resplendent, aspiring, as a dancer, and finally nestling in the grove.
I thank the creator for this space, a gift to his children, where nothing else exists but protection and an unhindered forward movement.
